2022 Reading and Viewing Stats Final

 

The year 2022 is now history, so it is time to face the music and check my 2022 Reading and Viewing Stats.  I had a feeling all year that I was way behind in all categories, and now that I look back at the two years, yes indeed, I was behind in all but one category.  

First, I watched more streaming shows in 2022 than in 2021, 111 vs. 86.  I think there is just a whole lot more content that I want to watch.  A feature in this year's stats list is the titles of all the books, movies, and TV shows that I watched (see bottom of the list).  While Disney+ shows dominate my viewing, there are several Netflix shows on this list and a Prime Video series.  Some of the series I started this year, will end up being on the 2023 list, because I did not finish the series such as Wednesday, Light and Magic, Willow, and Limitless.  

I look back on the year, and I am not sure what happened to my time.  Okay, I have some ideas why my stats might be lower.  First, my family introduced me to Spotify.  Let's just say that, if you didn't know, I love music.  I think I spent a lot more time this year just listening to music.  I spent much of 2022 listening to artists that I enjoyed as a teen or in college like The Cure, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, The Kinks, and the Dave Matthews Band, just to name a few.  

Another reason my reading and viewing stats may be lower is that I have brought on some new projects in my life.  2022 was my first full year of becoming a podcaster with Teachers in the Dungeon, so I have spent more time reading articles, D&D rule books, writing, and so forth.  I also went back to coaching Speech Team at the school in which I teach.  I also returned to organizing a large community event at our school, STEAM into Star Wars.  No excuses, but these things take time.  I also have been playing more games with my family, friends, and students.  

One weird observation is that in both years I read exactly 100 digital Marvel Comics on Marvel Unlimited.  That is so strange.  I am glad to see that though because it totally justifies the cost of the platform.  It averages out to less than a dollar per comic read.  That doesn't include the dozens of times that I reference a comic, title, author, or artist using the app.

If you recall, I started this recording process at the beginning of 2021 after seeing @eyeoncanon post that he does a similar annual recording of things he has read.  I am really happy to see some historical data now, and I look forward to continuing the recording process to see what kind of consumer of reading and viewing am I.  Will my stats go back up in 2023?  Will they go down or stay similar?  I have no idea, but you better believe, I will be giving you my quarterly updates as the year progresses.  

First Quarter of 2022 Personal Stats update

I am a couple weeks past due for this report, but here is the first quarter of 2022 "accountability" report for my Personal Stats of 2022!

I added a few things from 2021. Several people asked what books, movies, and series I had read. Once I turn the TV off, walk out of the theater or close the book, I just don't remember what I have read or seen (kind of sad, actually) at the drop of a hat. I guess I have moved on to the next thing! Anyway, at the bottom of the report, I have added that information. I also added a link from the 2021 First Quarter Report to see where I stood in comparison to approximately one year ago. Personal Stats for 2021 and Goals for 2022

Last year I was inspired at this time to begin tracking my reading and viewing.  It has been fun to watch the page numbers rise as the year went on and watch the number of episodes watched increase.  Now that I have tracked the numbers of books and pages, episodes, and movies, I now have a baseline to work with to compare my reading and viewing habits.   Thanks for following along all year with me as I have done quarterly reports for fun and accountability.  I plan to continue the quarterly check-ins as 2022 moves along.

Some goals I have for 2022:

I plan to keep track of the books and movies that I read and watch as the year goes on. I have had a few people ask about those. You can keep track of what I'm reading on the blog homepage in the left-hand menu.

I really want to read more books. I would like to see a number closer to 30 in 2022 even if that means more Graphic Novels and Manga!

I also want to take more advantage of the catalog of comics in Marvel Unlimited and Comics Plus. I have not gotten used to the new platform that Marvel has created for Marvel Unlimited. I don't like it, but I need to stop being stubborn and just figure out how to make it work for me.

2021 Personal Stats - Update October

Three quarters of the year down!  It is hard to believe that October is here which means it is time for the second to last Personal Stats update for 2021.  Here is where I am on October 12:

It is probably noted that I added a category titled "Books Abandoned."  I haven't done that yet, but I sense it coming soon.  I always tell the students at my school that if they are reading a book they aren't enjoying, they should stop reading it.  I may be reading a couple books that fit that criterion.  

Now that the school year is back in full swing, the stats have slowed in growth, but I did recently continue my MCU timeline rewatch by viewing Captain America: Civil War which has so much more context after watching The Falcon and  Winter Soldier this last year.  I also recently watched Raya and the Last Dragon with my family.  This was a fun, enjoyable film to watch with the family.  

I have been disappointed with the new update of Marvel Unlimited.  They removed the library, so when I want to read a quick comic when I have a few minutes, I have to hunt down something I haven't read.  In the past, I would just go to my unread library and choose something I had preselected.  I hope they bring this back in some updates.  

Anyway, one more quarter to create the baseline I need to measure my consumption of things I love.

2021 Personal Stats Update - July 6

I hope everyone is enjoying summer and taking some time to read and watch some great summer content.  I wanted to take a minute to update the stats on my entertainment consumption.  This includes the first six months of the year.  

Have you ever gotten in a funk where nothing seems to satisfy your entertainment enjoyment?  I hit that moment late in May when I was caught up on my print comics, I had finished a book, and I was just starting a comic event (X of Swords).  I just couldn't get into anything and I found myself spending more time playing mobile games instead of reading or even catching up on some shows.  It was really frustrating!  To shake things up, I checked out a book of short stories from the library thinking that I could get through some quick stories and maybe get into a groove.  Basically, do something different.  This plan worked beautifully!  I got through some great short stories by R.A. Salvatore and that got me back on track. Therefore, there is now a new category on my stat sheet: Short Stories.  I imagine I may return to those before the year is out.

Once again, I am really enjoying this process.  It has continued to motivate me to continue with more intentionality to enjoy the stories I love!  

I have read some really enjoyable books like, Sorcery of Thorns, The Bridge Over the River Kwai and short stories from R.A. Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt Anthology.  I have enjoyed on Disney+ Star Wars: The Bad Batch and Marvel's Loki.  I would like to finish the second season of Star Wars: Resistance and on Netflix I have seasons of She-Ra and The Last Avatar to finish up.  I would love to get those done before I head back to the 2021/2022 school year.  I also need to keep moving forward with my rewatch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that I started in January with my daughter.  

There is so much great stuff to enjoy and share!

Personal Stats update April 2021

I have no idea how I am doing as I have no stats from past years in which to compare, but I will say that this seems pretty good for me. I am really surprised by the number of films I have watched. Most of the rewatch films are MCU rewatches. Most of the TV series are WandaVision and The Falcon and Winter Soldier.

This has been fun. It seems silly, but I am actually finding it helps give me closure when I finish a story. I get to visit my Google Keep note where I keep the stats and I have a second to reflect on the story I just read or viewed. It is a short moment, but it is satisfying. I will pass on an update around July for the half-year check-in.
